The church had its beginnings in October 1973 when about 50 people attended a meeting at Shelbyville High School to gauge interest in forming a New Testament church. From this meeting a group of ten people began weekly fellowship in the home of Kelly Gross while attending worship services at other area Christian churches.

This core group formulated plans to acquire a building and establish a congregation. A building on South Morgan Street, two doors south of the present Post Office, was rented and named the "Morgan Street Christian Church".

A special revival was held December 3-9, 1973 to help build up membership. Phil Young was the evangelist for the meetings, which resulted in 30 charter members.

John Bender of Altamont was the church's temporary preacher. Guthrie Veech then served the church from February 1, 1974 until April 1975.

For the next few months students and staff from Lincoln Christian College manned the pulpit. One staff member, James Stark, so impressed the congregation that he was invited to serve as preaching minister for the church. His family was in Shelbyville from August 1975 until May 1977.

During that time, the Morgan Street building had served its purpose even though it was cold, damp and in need of repairs. The congregation began looking for a new home. Area Christian churches helped the congregation financially to purchase the building at 315 North Cedar Street.

About two weeks before moving into the building, in 1977, Jack Busby was hired to preach for the congregation and stayed until May 27, 1984. On June 3, 1984 Don Gerkin was hired as the church's first full-time minister.

Don Gerkin served the church until the spring of 1992. After a few months of preaching from Lincoln Christian College staff, the congregation called David McHenry to begin serving the church August 30, 1992.

While feeling growing pains, the church purchased five acres of land on North Hickory Street and ground was broken for a new church on October 24, 1992. The two-story brick structure was built primarily by volunteers while under the direction of Warren Rogers of Kingdom Builders.

With little more than a roof over their heads, an Easter Sunrise Service was the first gathering held in the new building in 1993. The first regular services were held in the church October 24, 1993-exactly one year from the ground breaking-where services continue today under the preaching of current minister, Mark Sanders.
